Exporting a chat from WhatsApp (Android and iPhone)
How to produce the ZIP that WaChat Web opens, and what its limits are.
1 min read
WhatsApp can export a single chat as a text file, optionally bundled with media in a ZIP. WaChat Web opens both.
Android
- Open the chat and tap the three dots in the top corner.
- Tap More → Export chat.
- Choose Include media to keep photos and voice notes, or Without media for a smaller file.
- Save it to Drive or Files, or send it to yourself.
- Open WaChat Web and drop the file anywhere on the page.
iPhone
- Open the chat and tap the name at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
- Choose Attach Media or Without Media.
- Save to Files or AirDrop it to a computer.
- Open WaChat Web on any device and drop the ZIP in.
The limit
WhatsApp truncates exports: the most recent 10,000 messages with media or 40,000 without. If your chat is longer, WaChat shows a "truncated" banner. To get the whole chat, use the 64-digit key method — it has no limit and covers every chat at once.
The export works on iPhone too, which is how iPhone users can use WaChat: export on the phone, open in WaChat Web anywhere.
